Lace + Tulle

“You feel very romantic when you’re in a ball gown. Everyone should wear one once in a while.” – Carolina Herrera

Oh Ms. Herrera, I so do agree with you. If I could, I would wear a ball gown more often. Or perhaps I need to create more opportunities to wear one. For those of you wondering what my black ball gown looks like without the jacket, here you go.

A few details about the ball gown:
– It was sewn entirely by hand.
– It took over 100 hours to construct.
– The lace was dyed black 5 times to achieve the darkest color.
– The lace had to be pieced together and then hand sewn onto the tulle of the bodice.
– The eyelash trim had to be individually cut.
– The skirt is made up of 6 layers: 2 layers of silky chiffon, 2 layers of floaty English tulle, 1 satin base layer, 1 lining layer.

Holmdene Manor

Located off of Robinson Road, right where Aquinas College now sits, there used to be a dairy farm. If you wind you way through Aquinas’ campus, you will eventually find a 22-room tudor-style mansion that was owned by the Lowe family and built in 1908. The family’s gorgeous red-brick home, which sat on the 69-acre McCoy dairy farm, was designed by architects from Boston and little expense was spared on the mansion and the dramatic re-landscaping of the farm.

Edward Lowe was the grandson of Richard E. Butterworth (yes, the Butterworth who helped found the hospital). His wife, Susan Blodgett, of the Delos Blodgett logging firm where Edward worked, was also of prestige.

The couple were wealthy and socially prominent, enough so,  that in February of 1911, President Theodore Roosevelt stayed the night at their house when he visited Grand Rapids for the 19th annual Lincoln Day dinner.

After the Lowes died, the property was sold to the University of Grand Rapids and assistant coach Gerald R. Ford posed for a picture with the school’s football team in front of the building in the fall of 1939. Not long after, when the college folded, the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids bought the estate and moved Aquinas College there from its site downtown. The building now serves as an administrative and faculty office building for Aquinas College (sources: here and here).
